A good mower Nov 18, 2009 We've had our Scotts Classic Reel Mower for almost 3 years, now, and have gotten to know it very well.
Here's our "yard profile": We live in Central Florida, so we mow year-round. We have a 1/4-acre yard that is relatively flat, and we do have obstacles to mow around (trees, fences, etc.). We have a mix of grass types so our yard will stay green year-round. This also means our yard gets really dense when the seasons transition. My husband and I both use this mower equally. We are in our late 20s.
The things I LOVE about this mower:
1. It is effective and it doesn't usually require more effort or time than any other push-style mower. There's very little maintenance - just lightly spray the reel with a lubricant before and after each use.
2. It's quiet, pleasant, and easy to use. There's no pulling a cord to start it, no exhaust fumes up your nose, no ruining the neighbor's barbecue with roaring lawnmower noises, and no stopping to re-fuel. It's small, lightweight, easy to store, and it doesn't shoot flying objects (like pine cones) out the side like power mowers.
3. Another significant thing - it keeps our lawn really healthy and green because it doesn't burn or rip the tips of the grass. Our lawn is so green that you can actually see a line between our yard and our neighbors' yards.
Things that AREN'T SO PERFECT about the mower:
1. It has trouble with high grass, so you have to be careful not to let the grass get too high. (By "too high," I mean the height at which the grass starts looking obviously unkempt.) If the grass gets too high, you will have to make 2 passes to even out the grass.
2. In late summer here in FL, our grass gets extremely dense in a few spots, and it can be a real pain to mow with this mower. We have found that if we alternate directions each time we mow during that season (east-west one week, north-south the next week), for some reason, it helps with this problem.
3. Occasionally, things like twigs get stuck in the mower that you have to stop and pull out.
Things that NEED TO BE IMPROVED about the mower:
1. The foam handle cover really is a joke - it just rips up. But the foam handle doesn't have anything to do with the actual function of the mower.
2. The sprockets that attach the reel to the wheels and make it turn have had to be replaced. I heard a rumor that the manufacturer has made improvements since we purchased our mower, so that may no longer be an issue.
3. The metal handle on our mower broke in half. It had to be welded together again, and is now fine.
I WOULD recommend this mower to people with small yards. Based on my experience, this mower is suitable for people of most ages and fitness levels (all our neighbors have test-driven our mower - ranging from 15 years old to 65).
I WOULD NOT recommend this mower to people who wait until the grass gets really high to mow it.
scott handlawnmower Nov 08, 2009 I like this lawnmower very much, it is light, accurate, and does not make much noise, I recommend it to all.
Great Mower Oct 25, 2009 I don't have much grass, most of my property is rock so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on an electric or gas powered mower.
I love it. It brough me back to my childhood when I used to mow our lawn with a "man powered" mower. Does the job and I get the needed exercise. It was also $20 cheaper than Home Depot.
Decent mower Oct 21, 2009 This item is great if you have a small lot, the ground is very smooth, there are not leaves or twigs on the lawn, and you maintain the grass on a weekly basis. I love this mower because it is quiet and it is very easy to use. However, it doesn't work as well when I let the grass get too long or if it runs into branches and leaves. I broke down and got a gas mower for the fall and to whip the lawn into shape so that I can use this reel mower during the spring and summer. I love mowing at 6am!!
The handle feels a little flimsy and the foam padding on the handle has torn already.
Get ready to work out! Oct 17, 2009 This little machine is great. I'm one of those people who has to research every major purchase online. So I did it with this mower, too. I looked all over the place and finally decided to get one. So far I had it for entire season and haven't had a reason to complain.
PROS: No need of fuel of any kind, so operation is free for you.
-The noise is much below the standard mower. It makes some noise, which comes from the blades cutting against the metal edge, but not too bad.
-It's pretty small and fits in tight places for storage.
CONS: The cutting quality is not perfect. For that very nice cut,(manicured) you'll gonna have to go over the area twice. I recommend going each way in different pattern to make it look good.
-It will not cut through twigs, so expect to get stopped suddenly by some small stuff. Rake first.
Overall, this machine is great. It saves you money on fuel and maintenance. It's environmentally friendly, doesn't make much noise. But pushing this thing around takes some energy out of you! If you in somewhat decent shape, this machine is just for you. Expect to break a sweat, or on a hot day to be pretty sweaty/wet. If you are lazy, fat, or never worked out, this machine is not for you. Expect to get a nice core and arms workout after a standard size front lawn.
