Complete piece of junk Nov 15, 2009 I thought this appliance was great for the 10-12 times I actually used it to cook eggs and toast muffins at the same time. But most of the time I just used it as a toaster. I have only had it for about a year maybe, and it will still cook eggs, but the toaster no longer works. So it no longer serves its purpose of being able to do both at once when you want to, so it is going to the dumpster. And unfortunately I didn't mail in my warranty card so it was a waste of money. I will never buy a back to basics product again.
egg and I Nov 13, 2009 This is our 2nd back to basics egg-and-muffin toaster. The first one lasted over 3 years of almost daily use. It is so easy to use that we even were able to get our lazy teenagers to use it. Also very easy to clean. The heating element for the egg cooker failed on our first one but the toaster still works fine.
First no eggs then no toast! Nov 13, 2009 This toaster operated OK for about a year. It is SLOW to toast bread even without the egg cooking on th side. Sure it is a really cool feature to be able to cook an egg on the side, but it would take me less time to get the pan out and do it the old fashioned way!
3 weeks ago I tried the egg feature and it no longer worked. This week we pluged it in at our new house and while my daughter was home it started buzzing and smoking. Luckily she was there to unplug it before it burned down the new house!!

Great Idea, Terrible Execution Nov 11, 2009 Like many of the lucky previous posters who didn't receive this product already broken, I really liked this item until it stopped working. After 6 weeks of regular use (3-5 times a week), the egg cooker didn't power up as usual. After a minute or two I noticed it wasn't cooking, turned it off and on a couple of times, and got it to work. This morning the same thing happened, except I couldn't get the egg cooker to come on no matter what i tried. I ended up cooking my sausage in the microwave and the egg in it's little frying pan on my stove! About 10 minutes later, after I had my less-than-delicious breakfast and was washing my plate, the egg cooker, which I had left on to see what would happen, suddenly came to life! Since many others have had this exact problem, it's obviously either poor engineering or quality control. Although I did enjoy the product while it worked, I feel it's probably not worth my time to invest in getting it replaced with another unit that will probably also break. I may just cut my losses. Congratulations to Back-to-Basics for making a product so cheaply that it's not worth my time to make them honor their warranty!! Enjoy my money jerks. Save yourself some drama, and thirty bucks, and move along... There's nothing to see here.
Poacher stopped working, they sent me a new one quickly Nov 09, 2009 I liked this toaster/poacher, except the egg poacher stopped working after about half a dozen uses. No idea why, just stopped working, no burning smell, no exterior damage, just stopped. There is a one year warranty, so I just contacted the company and they sent me a new one no questions asked. They did tell me to toss out my old one, maybe it is defective series, don't know. Besides breaking, you clean out the poaching tray all the time because there is always some residue that is not easy to remove after poaching. Overall though, when working I like it.
