5The Stinger Ultra has worked GREAT for us !!  Sep 20, 2009
I have two of the Stinger Ultra units. At night, I keep one in the kitchen downstairs and one up stairs in the loft area. This arrangement has worked great for 2-years killing the bugs that get in the house. It gets large and small moths, flys, mossquitos, knats, fruit flys and other flying pests. One of my lamps has just gone out after 2-years and the other unit is still operating well. Our experience for "inside" use has been a winner.

5Zapper without the Bzzzzzt Noise  Sep 12, 2009
This thing is awesome. I was very happy with my old Mosquito Magnet until it stopped working, and I had not heard that these zappers no longer made any zap-noises. I didn't do an exact analysis, but I assume I'm saving a lot of money on energy, based ont he bulb wattage ans how often I had to put another 20 lbs of propane into the magnet.

This can be set two ways - day & night or just night use. The "switch" is very simple, it's just a cover that slides over a photovoltaic cell. The instructions say not to leave it out in the rain, but that is exactly where ours is right now. It will last about 2 years even if you just leave it out. (we're on our second one right now - and this doesn't bother me at all compared to what I spent on the old mosquito magnet). Actually the first one might have had a burnt bulb - never tried to change it.

As for mosquitos, I would say it's a bit more thorough than the magnet. With the magnet, it takes until the 2nd year before you won't get bitten in your backyard. After the first year, you'll see one only occassionally. With the Zapper, even during the peak of the first summer (for one year in between we had nothing), you'll rarely see a mosquito. Now into the 3rd year, I can't remember the last time I saw a mosquito in any corner of our 1/4-acre yard. The the first summer we left it on 24-hours a day.

For placement, too, I put it to the far side of the side-yard opposite the garage, so I can't see it from any window or the back yard. The neighbors asked what it was, but the light didn't bother them and they appreciate the reduced mosquitos. The old magnet had to be in the shade, which meant in the backyard in view of the porch.

For total insects, the zapper of course doesn't discriminate. It gets all the moths also, which is fine for me - less catapillers on the trees, and less moths getting in the house - and I can leave the front door light on now at night when I'm out and not come back with an etymology collection on my screen door when I get back.

The one thing you'll notice is the metal mesh fills up every week or so, and because of the diameter of the outer mesh, it's hard to clear it by just blowing out the dead bugs. You can, but you'll give yourself a headache or half pass out! It seems to keep working full or empty. I wish I had some compressed air to clean it out, though.

1Doesn't Last  Aug 27, 2009
Didn't last a year before it wouldn't light up. Replacing the $14 bulb didn't work. This is just poorly made and has no chance of ever lasting the 3 yr warranty. Walmart has even stopped selling this item because of so may returns.

1Stung by the Stinger  Aug 04, 2009
I bought one of these useless things at the local Lowe's (all they sell is Stinger), assured by the nice person working there that it was a great unit, and that the black light made a big difference in how many bugs are attracted to it. Well, atypically for me, I didn't do my research prior to buying it, and when checking online to see how badly I got overcharged, I found these reviews here at Amazon. I thought it might have been a fluke that so many people had written such bad reviews, but I must concur that these Stinger units are poorly designed. At about 7:00 pm I hung the UVB45 up on the outside corner of my fenced in area, hoping to draw the bugs away from my patio. When I plugged it in, there was an immediate, strong ZAP just as the bulb came on. I thought that it might indeed work, at least for a while. Well, that first zap was the only zap I ever heard the unit make. I thought it might take a little while to start attracting the bugs, and so I left the unit on, and went inside. I came back out around 10:15 pm, but still no zaps, just a crowd of bugs walking around on the unit, electrode grates and all. Disgusted, I left it running all night to see what it would do, and the next morning I went out to see what had happened, but no dead bugs, just a few stragglers walking around, still there from the party they had on it the night before. At that point I noticed the light wasn't burning any more. After taking the unit down and putting it in a shaded area (I wanted to see if I just couldn't see the "black" light in the sunlight), it came back on. I checked the switch, and it was in the 24 hour position. Even that didn't work! I switched the switch to all 3 positions, and if there was bright light present, it wouldn't come on, even in the "always on" position, unless I covered the light sensor with my hand. Needless to say I returned it to Lowe's, and will be ordering the Flowtron Flowtron Model BK-40D Electronic Insect Killer (One Acre Coverage) from Amazon instead. It is rated quite highly here, so I hope my luck with it will be better. I would definitely recommend that people forget about the Stinger line of products, and search for something that actually works. I wish I could rate it zero stars, since nothing about it worked properly.

1Where were the engineers?  Jul 16, 2009
Sounds repetitive, but it's true: worked for one month, then even with a new bulb, it didn't. I know it's getting power, because the power light is on, but no zap-o-matic. I agree with all the other reviews--this is recycling material that should have been canned at the engineering stage, not mass-produced and pushed in fancy packaging to big-box retailers. What in the world causes companies to produce garbage like this and expect the word won't get out?
