1Usability and reliability problems  Nov 30, 2009
I purchased this product in order to spray paint our back fence, which I knew from experience would be too tedious and time consuming to paint by hand. Unfortunately my experience with it was quite disappointing.

In the first place, the unit stopped working properly after about 10 gallons of paint. The motor would run constantly (even when the hopper was full), and while I could get some spray from the gun the level of pressure was completely inadequate. Thinking that the unit was clogged, I emptied and cleaned everything, per the instructions, but the problem remained. There's simply not enough pressure now to finish the job (and by the way, my fence is only 1/2 painted). You can even hear the pressure escaping from the system when you turn the machine off, though there doesn't seem to be a leak as there is no paint spilling out anywhere.

Secondly, even if the unit were working correctly I wouldn't have been happy with it, for two reasons. One, the variable pressure control switch isn't really variable - it is either "low" or "max". While you can set the dial to something in between, it won't stay there. The vibration from the machine when the pump runs will slowly cause the pressure dial to move to the low setting. You can keep it at max if you want to (there's a slight stickiness to the low and max settings), but anything in between will only last you a minute or so. This became a highly annoying problem since max pressure caused me too much overspray but low was completely inadequate.

Third, the hopper design is just bad in my opinion. I felt like I was constantly having to stop and refill it, and it will only work until the unit has about a 1/2 gallon left in the hopper. There's no way to see how much paint is left without opening the unit up, so you just have to guess - or wait for it to run out of paint.

I'm returning this unit and going to try the Wagner Pro Coat. That unit has an inlet tube that you stick directly into the paint can or bucket, so no more hopper filling. And hopefully it will last more than 10 gallons too.

4Time saver  Oct 25, 2009
I bought one of these reconditioned and it is a time saver no doubt. I repainted my entire house in a weekend (not the trim, still have to do that by brush). This will save you a boatload of time. It's not meant for more detailed work (such as above mentioned trim), but for wide swaths of painting.

Clean up can be a bit of a chore. It will take you about an hour to clean up, rinse and store the paint sprayer the first time you use it, but the more you do it, the more you get used to it. Eventually it will take you no time to rip this thing apart and get it cleaned and stored.

My advice is to read the instructions very carefully. The instructions are very good, but I can tell that many of the sour reviews about this product are due to people not reading the instructions thoroughly.

No regrets on purchasing this here!

4Handiest Painter Ever Used  Sep 21, 2009
Not purchased thru Amazon since I was able to find it considerably cheaper in a local store. A bit leary due to the amount of time needed to set up and clean up. But actually went well and quickly once I read and understood the instructions. Used as a sprayer for the our one story home. Initially did not prime using it due to some of the review comments of others who found that the primer paint clogged the machine. Big mistake. Took us four days to hand prime compared to four hours to spray 1st finishing coat. Afterwards, loaded primer (Zinsser 1-2-3) and sprayed another project (lattice). No problems with machine handling the extra thick primer. Only problem was that the lid kept falling off as I moved the machine. Since we are in the woods painting our cottage the open paint reservoir was at risk of collecting leaves and dirt. Would have given the machine five stars without that problem.
All in all a great piece of equipment that does require some skill when using and care when loading and cleaning. A whole lot cheaper than hiring a contractor for the job.

4Great roller, limited sprayer  Apr 24, 2009
Please consider my opinion of what you are getting with the Paint Crew Plus as coming from a DIY homeowner .

You get a pump that can handle heavy paints. A tank that holds 2 1/2 gallons. A nice long hose, 25ft. A roller attachment and two roller covers (additional roller covers are $5). A spray tip with two nozzles. A manual that should definitely be studied before the machine is used.

I roller painted four bedrooms of a vacant home (and one is big, larger than my living room) in about 2 1/2 hours. Clean up added another hour. While I was painting the contractor that was working on the kitchen remodel started asking me about it. I finished the first standard sized room in 25 minutes. I moved to the second room and started painting. I overheard the contractor telling his helper he was thinking about getting one. I offered the contractor the opportunity to test it out. He painted half a wall in 5 minutes. He's now going to get himself a pro quality power paint roller.

Sounds like a real bang-for-the-buck painting machine. But I'm giving it only four stars. I have also used the sprayer attachment, twice, and the machine comes up short here. BUY IT FOR THE ROLLER, NOT THE SPRAYER. My complaints about the sprayer are: 1) Paint consumption goes way up. I primed some outdoor play equipment, three gallons. Then I painted the same things with exterior paint, two gallons, without perfect coverage. I began to dislike the color so I repainted the same things by hand with brush and roller with only one gallon of a lighter color and got perfect coverage. Waste probably wouldn't be so severe on something like a picket fence or the side of a barn. 2) Where did all that extra paint go? For a while I had white grass and shrubs. Painting this outdoor stuff was a test to see if I thought I could use the sprayer indoors. Either the sprayer is not good enough or I am not good enough, and I think both. 3) The spray pattern is not uniform. The machine has enough pumping power to spray exterior latex, but one side of the spray pattern was heavier. The spray tip is a simple screw on attachment and when the tip got messy there were even gaps in the spray pattern (to the credit of the sprayer, the tip can be cleaned in just a few seconds by flipping a lever to reverse the direction of the nozzle). I had used the sprayer first, before the roller, and at first felt I had wasted my money. But does anyone make a really good paint sprayer for this price?

Having used the roller now, I have no regrets about buying the Paint Crew Plus, but I paid only $139 for it. I think you can get it every day at home centers for about $180. For a homeowner, this is a speedy roller painter that adds a limited sprayer. If you're thinking about getting a power roller, consider just getting a power roller without the sprayer. just be careful to get one that can pump heavy paints.

And now a cleanup tip. The tank has a spring loaded plunger valve at the bottom, with an o-ring that keeps fluids from leaking out the bottom of the tank. Part of cleanup is taking this apart and washing the paint out of it, a simple task. Unfortunately, when you do this you also wash off the lubricant from the o-ring. The result is the valve sticks and doesn't close completely and fluids leak out. This must be a common problem because Wagner includes a little tool, with a storage compartment beneath the tank, for pushing the valve down when it gets stuck. When you reassemble the valve on the tank, be sure to apply some o-ring grease so that it doesn't stick (get some from a plumbing supply store, don't use Vaseline or regular grease, they can ruin the o-ring).

1Didn't last long  Mar 19, 2009
I bought this thing (Wagner 515010 Paint Crew Plus Paint Sprayer) to spray the ceilings in 2 condos (total of about 1600 square feet of ceiling). Used Zinsser primer and Dunn Edwards paint. Worked like a charm. 5 stars at this point. Spent the best part of the next hour cleaning the machine as per the instructions. 4 stars at this point.
A few days later, with my family room prepared with plastic sheeting everywhere, I sprayed the primer O.K. Still 4 stars. Then, nearly at the end of the first coat of latex, the machine started running continuosly with a marked drop in pressure. Down to 3 stars now.
I spent the next hour or so farfing around trying to get things going again but to no avail. Down to 2 stars. Gave up and finished the job by roller. And...we're at 1 star.
Thankfully, I was able to return the unit for a refund. I certainly won't be buying another Wagner!
