2Yup, our step mechanism is broken too, after trying to fix  Jan 04, 2010
The good:
* Looks nice
* Size is nice, larger than some others we've tried
* Plastic bucket inside is nice, though would be better with a handle
* Appears to be high quality on the outside, the finish, the pedal, etc.

The bad:
* Ours is broken too, after normal use
* My roommate was able to reconnect the mechanism a couple times, but eventually it totally broke.

Was very interesting to see other reviews mentioning that. Ironically, the broken mechanism was why we're looking for a new can.

3It's fairly well made BUT....  Aug 06, 2009
it's a tall 8 gallon round can, so the 12-13 gallon bags made for rectangular garbage cans don't work very well. They bunch up around the edges and only go about 3/4th to the bottom. Probably better in a rectangular shape. Aside from that it is well made, but I'm not sure why a hydraulic drop down is needed except so there is something to break.

4Not for a hugh family but for the size it is nice! I use 13 gal Hefty bag  Jul 24, 2005
I ended up getting mine for $59 at bed, bath and beyond. I This is a 30 liter can with the stainless steel top. I'm upgrading from a "way to small" under the sink trash bin. This can is supposed to hold 8 gallons. I'm giving this a 4 star because standard bags in the US are not the same size as Liters. I'm using hefty's 13 gal draw string bags. Whenever I empty my trash I always end up putting something else into the bag so I'm not wasting the extra space. I really wanted the 45 liter can with the butterfly opening but it is priced around $179 and I couldn't justify the cost. This brand is good. Simplehuman has a nice liner, and opens and closes nicely so you really don't have hold the lid open. No smell and you don't have to touch your own trash. My kitchen can't accomodate an under the sink trash bin, so this do nicely. BTW the stainless steel ones with the bag-ring holders will drive you crazy. You get what you pay for.

5Mine works pretty well.  Dec 06, 2004
I am very happy with this product!

I am a single bachelor but I like cooking, so I use this waste can normally or more than that. I've been using this product for a year but it has not broken or become dull. I like its simple but robust design. The inner plastic bag from Simplehuman fits to this can very well, easy to replace, and keeps me feeling the kitchen very clean. I just love it although I don't know how I would feel if I was so unlucky that I had to deal the warranty business.

Yeah, I love it!

2Nice looking, but too narrow and clogs easily  May 18, 2004
The good:

Very nice looking product, as are all the Simplehuman trash cans. My version has a black plastic lid, the one pictured looks like it's all metal. The opening mechanism is quite smooth, no annoying "clang" as the lid closes (like with some of their other products).

The bad:

In practice, the tall, round form factor of the round cans just doesn't work. The can isn't wide enough to accomodate empty boxes or anything much more bulky than a wadded up piece of paper. This might not be an issue if you're planning to use it for a room other than a kitchen. But the kitchen was your planned destination for your trash can, I'd strongly recommend getting one of the cans with a wider opening (the rectangular or butterfly shapes). Otherwise, almost any normal kitchen trash (empty food boxes, 2L soda bottles, etc) will clog the can and reduce the usable disposal space to almost nil.

The can dents extremely easily, not taking much more pressure than it would to dent an empty aluminum soda can. Shallow dents can be pounded out with a good whack to the inside of the can, but any deep dent will leave an ugly mark on the "skin" of the can.

Standard bulk trash bags aren't a good fit, being wider and shorter than what would fit this can. You'll end up wrapping half the bag around the top to take up the slack, and the bag won't reach the bottom of the can. Simplehuman sells fitted bags for their cans, but they're like $6/20 count, about the same price as a bulk roll of 250 at Walmart.

It would be nice if there were some sort of clip to hold the bag in place. There's a bit of a rim at the top of the plastic liner, but it's not quite enough to hold it tightly in place.

Conclusion:

Beautiful, but without the function to match. I'm kicking myself that I bought this instead of the (admittedly much more expensive) butterfly or rectangular can - I wound up with a pretty trash can that I can't stand to use. I'll be happy if I can garage sale the thing and use the proceeds towards buying the 38L Butterfly can. My parents have it and love it, and I've envied that can ever since I first saw it.
