Good, but could use some improvements Nov 09, 2009 Overall, I'd say that this was a good product. It's the only one I've found on the market like this and appears to do what it is designed to do, but it could definitely use some improvements...
The instructions have quite a few mistakes (e.g. incorrect diagrams, missing parts in list, etc.), but despite that fact I was still able to complete the installation. The instructions could also be improved. For instance, I have no idea how the manufacturer expected anyone to install the bolts that go onto the ends of the brackets without removal of the pulley wheels (which I found in a review here). In addition, they don't explain how to adjust the level of the rack from front and back (which, BTW - you can do by adjusting how high the nuts are on the bolts that attach the cable to the rack). I could definitely see how someone would get frustrated/confused when following the instructions.
I too recommend upgrading the lag screws (like the other reviewers), as I also broke one of the included screws. You can either get ones made of a stronger metal or go with a bigger size. I used 1/4" lag screws which still fit into the holes in the bracket. I would also make sure that you pre-drill all the holes as well as put wax onto the screws so that they go into the joists easier.
I noticed that the holes drilled into one of the parts was a tad off, but not so much that I couldn't make adjustments. Again, something that would frustrate/confuse some people.
Their customer service seemed to be pretty good. I was missing one of the hooks, so I gave them a call. Within a couple days, I received an entire set of screws, nuts, bolts and washers.
As far as the weight maximum, I would not recommend going over 200 lbs. I have approximately 200 lbs loaded onto it, and it gets tough raising the rack up. In fact, I noticed that this amount of weight causes the bracket where the winch is installed to torque a little bit. I doubt the rack would ever fall from the ceiling, but over time, the winch might not last. Also, with that much weight, I don't think you'd be able to use a cordless drill to raise/lower the rack (as shown in one of the pictures).
Good Product with a couple of small changes Oct 30, 2009 Good product and fairly priced. I changed the lag screws they provided for some a little longer. Did not feel comfortable with the ones sent. Also added nuts and bolts to the end of the supports to stabilize the support bars. If you have a high ceiling the unit will not come to the floor unless you replace the cables. My garage is about 11 or 12 feet and unit ends up 2 to 3 feet off the floor for loading which is not an issue.
Almost perfect Oct 22, 2009 The bottom line is that this product is exactly as advertised and was the perfect solution for what I wanted to accomplish .. storage of the middle seats of our Toyota Sienna which otherwise take up a lot of garage floor space. Now, the reason I did not give it a 5-Star rating. The assembly instructions are weak and would not be supportive of the mechanically dis-inclined. There is an 800 number to call for help so that might take care of the instructions problem. Then there are the lift cables. It appeared that one of the cables (which are assembled at the factory) was done by either a very disgrunted employee or someone with inadequate skills or training. The cables are a double loop with locking clamps design at each end and one of the cables had much too large of loops making it about 20 inches shorter than the other cable. When I set out to correct the problem, I discovered that the cable clamps were only finger tight which could have proved disasterous with sufficient (but within specs) weight. So, if you are up for a bit of an assembly challenge, you should be quite happy with the end result.
Very good design...but! Oct 19, 2009 First off, Amazon was top notch in this transaction. Item was signed, sealed, delivered perfect. Second, thanks to all your reviews. Learned a lot, and willing to add to that.
Finally, just the materials and hardware alone make this a quality product.
So just to add, I have a few install tips. I was lucky to have 16" on center joists, quality stud finder, a little giant ladder, 48" level/straight edge, carpenter square, and all needed power/hand tools.
I just laid out a big capital "I" on the finished ceiling using the above, then attached the center T sections to the marks on the ceiling. Making sure of course I was in the middle of the joists.
Then I took one extension piece out of the box, removed the pulley, and attached it to one of the center sections with supplied bolts, and pressed it to the ceiling.
There was my already drawn line in the middle of the slotted holes. I used a sharpie, and marked each hole right in the middle.
I did this for the 3 remaining areas. The last one, I just left the extension arm up there and all holes were ready for pilot drilling. I used a step up size drill bit. (same size as the shank on the lag bolt) No issues. All went in smooth.
So there, all the rest is a cake walk. Easy. But still took 4+ hours. (from staring at instructions ?> to the finish line)
The platform J hooks are the only reason I'm leaving a star off. There's got to be a better way, Racor! But would highly recommend, and will buy again.
Train Rack Oct 04, 2009 I'm hoping it has no problems holding up my train table. I've reinforced the ceiling joists with cross members. As long as it does hold, which it seems like it will, i will be very happy with the construction and flexibility of using this item. I was really happy with the Amazon price.
